About this place
Sekondi-Takoradi is Ghana's fourth-largest city, a twin port city formed from 17th-century Dutch, Swedish, and English forts that merged into a single municipality in 1946. It serves as the capital of the Western Region and a major industrial and commercial hub, with timber, plywood, shipbuilding, and railroad repair driving the local economy. Major rail lines connect the city to Accra and Kumasi.
The discovery of large offshore crude oil reserves has transformed the area, attracting people from around the world and adding a cosmopolitan layer to the historic trading-port character.
