About Republic of Ghana

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Ghana, located in West Africa, is often called "Africa for beginners" and makes a gratifying first-time destination for the region. Its appeal stems from good infrastructure, political stability, and widespread use of English. The people are generally very welcoming, and while the laid-back attitude can take some getting used to, it's considered one of the country's delights.

Tourism is growing quickly, driven by a stable democracy and abundant resources. Ghana's rich history spans from the ancient Ghana Empire and the powerful Ashanti Kingdom to its colonial past as the Gold Coast. In 1957, it became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence. Today, visitors can explore UNESCO World Heritage sites, vibrant cities, and natural treasures ranging from coastal forts to savannah national parks.

The country is divided into 16 administrative regions, each offering distinct experiences. The capital Accra and the historic city of Kumasi are major hubs, while the coast and northern areas feature unique cultural and natural attractions. English is the official language, making travel relatively straightforward for English-speaking visitors.

Weather Climate Summary

  • Ghana has a tropical climate that is hot and humid year-round. Average daily temperatures range from 30°C during the day to 24°C at night. In northern Ghana, the rainy season runs from April to October. In the south, rainfall occurs in two peaks: April to June and September to October. Southwest Ghana tends to be wetter than the rest of the country. Between December and March, the Harmattan wind from the Sahara brings very low humidity, dry air, and dusty fog. This can reduce visibility and create hazy conditions but also offers a break from the humidity.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Always negotiate taxi fares before getting in; walking away can help secure a better price.
  • For longer intercity travel, consider STC buses as they are the most reliable with posted departure times.
  • If renting a car, note that vehicles with foreign registration are not allowed to circulate between 18:00 and 06:00.
  • Return glass bottles from drinks to the seller to avoid losing a deposit; it's common practice at "spots" and roadside stands.
  • Carry small denominations of Ghanaian cedi (GH₵) for bargaining and paying for services like tro-tros and market goods.
  • Consider using the Little ride-hailing app in Accra and major cities for a more predictable taxi experience.
  • Consult the Ghana Tourism Authority's website or local information for up-to-date safety advisories and travel guidance.
