About this place
Nestled in the lush Surma Valley, Sylhet is a vibrant city and the capital of Sylhet Division in Bangladesh. Surrounded by terraced tea gardens, tropical forests, and rolling hills, the region breaks the monotony of the country's flat landscapes. The valley is shaped by the winding Surma and Kushiara rivers, dotted with haors—vast natural depressions that transform from green fields into large bodies of water with the seasons, attracting millions of migratory birds from Siberia.
Rich in history and culture, Sylhet is known for the revered shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal, who arrived in 1303. The area is also home to indigenous tribes like the Monipuris, Khasis, and Garos, who maintain their traditional customs and festivals. While the city has developed significantly, it is not particularly walkable, and visitors should be mindful of pickpockets in crowded areas.

Planning Tips
- Use ride-sharing to get around — Uber and a local service called 'Jatri' are available within the city, along with rickshaws for shorter distances.
- Stay vigilant in markets — be aware of your personal belongings in crowded bazaars like Zindabazar, as pickpocketing is common and can be hard to notice.
- Alcohol is scarce — outside of the bar at the Porjoton Motel on Airport Road, alcohol is not readily accessible. Avoid drinking in public areas.
- Bargain for accommodation — many hotels offer decent and reasonably priced rooms, and negotiating the rate is a standard and helpful practice.
