About Bangladesh

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Bangladesh, officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh, is a South Asian country on the edge of the Indian subcontinent. It is nearly completely surrounded by India, with a short land border with Myanmar and a coastline along the Bay of Bengal. One of the most ethnically homogeneous countries in the world, Bengalis make up 98% of the population, and the country has one of the largest Muslim populations globally.

Bangladesh offers a rich tapestry of experiences: World Heritage Sites, pristine beaches, archaeological sites, bustling markets, and diverse wildlife. Its landscape is primarily a low-lying plain on the deltas of major Himalayan rivers — the Ganges, Jamuna (Brahmaputra), and Meghna — creating fertile farmland and a vast network of waterways. The country's history dates back to the Chalcolithic period, and it became an independent nation in 1971 after a liberation war.

For the traveler, Bangladesh provides opportunities for eco-tourism, river cruising, hiking, and exploring vibrant cities like Dhaka, as well as uncovering hidden gems in its countryside, hill tracts, and mangrove forests. The people are known for their hospitality, and the country is endowed with delicious cuisine, particularly seafood.

Weather Climate Summary

  • Bangladesh has a subtropical monsoon climate with six distinct seasons: winter (Dec–Jan), spring (Feb–Mar), summer (Apr–May), monsoon (Jun–Jul), autumn (Aug–Sep), and late autumn (Oct–Nov). Average temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C in winter and 21°C to 34°C in summer. Annual rainfall varies significantly by region: 1600 mm to 2000 mm in the west, 2000 mm to 4000 mm in the southeast, and 2500 mm to 4000 mm in the northeast. The monsoon season brings heavy rain that can quickly submerge cities like Dhaka and Chittagong. Cyclones above category three or four are uncommon, especially from January through March, but can still bring widespread disruption, particularly in coastal areas. The best time to visit is October through April, when the weather is drier and more pleasant.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Obtain a visa in advance if possible, especially for longer stays or multiple entries, to avoid potential issues with visa on arrival.
  • Learn some basic Bengali phrases — it will greatly enhance your travel experience and help with navigation and bargaining.
  • Dress modestly: covering shoulders, chest, and legs is recommended. Women may prefer to wear a salwar kameez or carry a scarf for cultural respect.
  • Carry small denominations of local currency (taka) for rickshaws, CNG rides, and market purchases, as change may not always be available.
  • Stay informed about local news regarding political protests or strikes (hartals), and avoid areas where demonstrations are occurring.
  • Drink only bottled or boiled water, and be cautious with street food — ensure it is freshly cooked and piping hot.
  • Arrange transportation in advance for long-distance bus or train travel, especially during holidays, as tickets sell out quickly.
