About this place
Sana'a, the capital of Yemen, sits in the Yemeni Mountains at a high elevation, giving it a surprisingly mild climate compared to other Arabian Peninsula cities. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, it offers a window into a way of life that has remained unhurried and largely untouched by the rapid industrialisation seen elsewhere in the region.
The Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its distinctive multi-storey tower houses decorated with qamariya windows. Outside the airport and across town, the uniform painted windows and walls create a striking visual character. Visitors will immediately notice locals wearing the jambiya — a traditional curved dagger — and many chewing qat leaves, a widespread local custom.

Planning Tips
- Arrange a local guide for exploring the Old City, as streets are poorly signposted and maps are unreliable.
- Obtain a travel permit (tasirih) from the Ministry of Tourism before overland travel; make photocopies for military checkpoints.
- Bargaining is expected in souks — ask for the "Yemeni price" with your guide, and carry US dollars, euros, or Yemeni rials.
- Use only bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth, and be cautious with street food to avoid stomach issues.
- Note that jambiya daggers count as weapons for customs purposes when leaving Yemen.
