Weather Climate Summary

  • Yemen's climate varies greatly by region due to its diverse topography. The coastal plain along the Red Sea is hot and humid, while the western highlands enjoy a temperate climate with monsoon rains that can bring rainfall similar to a rainforest. The central highlands, including Sana'a at over 2,195 m (7,200 ft), experience extreme diurnal temperature swings, with daytime highs reaching around 27°C and night-time lows that can dip below freezing in winter. The eastern interior is a harsh, dry desert, including the Rub' al-Khali (Empty Quarter), where temperatures can exceed 61°C. The central plateau and eastern regions are largely arid, with vegetation limited to valleys and wadis.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Check official travel advisories: The security situation is extremely volatile. Do not travel to Yemen without up-to-date, professional security advice.
  • Secure a visa in advance: Most nationalities need a visa, which can be arranged through an embassy or a licensed tour operator. Visas are generally valid for 30 days.
  • Hire a registered tour operator: For travel outside Sana'a, this is strongly recommended for safety, logistics, and permits. Only use operators registered with the Yemen Ministry of Tourism.
  • Obtain a travel permit (tasriih): Required for all travel outside the capital. Obtain this from the tourist police in Sana'a before departing.
  • Pack for extremes: Bring warm layers for highland nights, sun protection for the desert, and a good supply of any personal medications. A first-aid kit is essential.
  • Respect local customs: Dress modestly, avoid public displays of alcohol consumption, and never photograph people, especially women, without explicit permission.
  • Stay healthy: Drink only bottled water, cook food thoroughly, and be aware of the risk of malaria in low-lying areas. Consider rabies vaccination.
