About this place

Rangpur is a major commercial and economic hub in northwestern Bangladesh, serving as the divisional headquarters and a key center for banking, insurance, and trade. Situated on the banks of the Ghaghat River, the city anchors a densely populated metropolitan area of around 10 million people. Its strategic position has long made it an important crossroads, from its Mughal-era integration to its current role as a gateway for the surrounding agricultural districts.

The city balances its modern role with deep historical roots. Conquered by the Mughals in the 16th century and established as a district headquarters in 1769, Rangpur is one of Bangladesh’s oldest municipalities. Visitors will find echoes of this layered past in its architecture, from ancient mosques to sprawling landlord estates.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Plan extra travel time from Dhaka — the drive via the Rangpur Highway takes about 7.5 hours in typical traffic, so factor in a full day for the journey.
  • Fly into Saidpur — the nearest airport is west of the city, providing a quicker alternative to the road trip for those arriving by air.
  • Pack for humidity — lightweight, breathable clothing is essential for much of the year, along with rain gear if visiting during the monsoon months.
  • Use Rangpur as a hub — the city’s hotels and restaurants make it a practical base for day trips to nearby zamindar estates and rural attractions.
