About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Puthia is a village in the Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh, best known for its remarkable Hindu temple complex and the grand zamindar mansion built by the once-wealthy Puthia Raj family. The estate flourished as the second-largest zamindary in the Indian subcontinent before the partition of India, and today the well-preserved grounds surround a central lake and feature several ornate temples with intricate terracotta ornamentation.

It remains a quiet, off-the-beaten-path destination with few Western visitors. Its compact size makes it an easy day trip from nearby Rajshahi or Natore, letting you explore the main sights on foot without needing an overnight stay in the village itself.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Getting there — frequent buses connect Rajshahi and Natore; ask to get off at Puthia and walk or take a rickshaw the short distance to the temples.
  • Getting around — walking is easy in the compact temple area; you can also hire a rickshaw driver for a few hours who may double as an informal guide.
  • Eating locally — small street stalls near the village centre sell snacks like spicy puffed rice (jhal muri), but there are no full-service restaurants.
  • Overnight base — plan to stay in Rajshahi or Natore, where hotels can also arrange a car for the day.
