About this place
Mukalla is the largest city in eastern Yemen and the primary gateway to the historic Hadhramaut region. As a bustling port on the Arabian Sea, it is one of the more developed cities in the country, featuring a well-maintained waterfront and good road infrastructure. The city’s name is rooted in the Arabic word for "to preserve," a nod to its long-standing role as a safe harbor and trading hub.
Historically linked to the ancient incense trade route from Qana, Mukalla was founded as a fishing settlement in 1035. Today, with a population of about 595,000, it blends a deep maritime heritage with a compact, walkable historic core situated on a scenic peninsula.
