About this place
Cumilla (formerly Comilla) is one of Bangladesh’s oldest historically significant districts, set along the well-traveled Dhaka–Chattogram highway in the southeast. Its roots reach back to the ancient Samatata Kingdom, a Buddhist center of learning between the 6th and 13th centuries. Later layers of history — British colonial administration, World War II Allied camps, and a proud role in the 1971 Liberation War — add depth to a place that today balances its past with the rhythms of modern life. The district is famous for originating the beloved milk sweet roshomalai, and travelers who pause here find a quieter, more reflective side of the country.
While it is not a major tourist hub, Cumilla rewards visitors with evocative archaeological ruins, a superb on-site museum, and a serene Commonwealth war cemetery. These sites sit amid peaceful rural scenery, just a short ride from the city center. Because it lies roughly midway between Dhaka and Chattogram, the district makes a practical cultural stopover rather than a standalone destination.

Planning Tips
- Coming from India — travelers can use the Bibirbazar–Sonaura Land Port connecting Tripura with Cumilla District; after immigration, the city is roughly 30–40 minutes by local transport.
- Getting around — autos (battery-run three-wheelers) are good for short city trips, but hire a car with a driver to visit archaeological and temple sites outside the city.
- Timing your stop — roads can be busy on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, so allow about 2.5–3 hours from Dhaka or plan your break accordingly when traveling in either direction.
- Tasting the local fame — seek out well-established sweet shops near the city center for the freshest roshomalai.
