About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Chattogram (formerly known as Chittagong) is Bangladesh's premier port city and second-largest urban center, located on the Bay of Bengal. With a population of around 6.5 million, it has long been a crossroads of trade and culture, flourishing on the Maritime Silk Road and serving as the eastern terminus of the historic Grand Trunk Road. Today, it is a dynamic metropolitan area where rolling hills and greenery contrast with a bustling port on the Karnaphuli River.

The city is home to historic mosques, Sufi shrines, and remnants of its Portuguese, Mughal, and British colonial past. The old quarter features sites like the Anderkilla Imperial Jame Mosque and the former Portuguese settlement of Patherghatta. The city's affluent neighborhoods of Khulshi and Nasirabad offer a more modern side, with restaurants, gentlemen's clubs, and golf courses. Local enthusiasm for mezbani feasts — featuring a famously hot curry — is legendary, and the city is a hub for Bangladesh's seafood industry, offering some of the world's best lobsters.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Negotiate transport fares upfront — Whether taking a rickshaw, CNG auto-rickshaw, or taxi, agree on the price before starting your journey to avoid disputes.
  • Bring cash — While ATMs are widely available (accepting American Express, MasterCard, and Visa), many smaller shops and vendors only accept cash. Get money before entering bars or clubs.
  • Stay at reputable hotels for food safety — To avoid stomach upset, eat at larger hotels and better restaurants where food is prepared with sanitized water. Avoid raw salads.
  • Book train tickets in advance — Trains to Dhaka, Sylhet, and other cities are popular and often cheaper than buses. Reserve at the station or through a travel agency.
  • Allow extra time at the airport — Security screening can take a while, especially on days when major events end. Schedule flights accordingly.
  • Exercise indoors — Due to pollution levels, outdoor exercise is not recommended. Opt for hotel gyms or pools. Swimming in rivers is also not advised.
  • Check visa and travel advisories — The border with Myanmar remains closed, and the Indian border is accessible by car. Consult official travel advisories and visa requirements before your trip.
