About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

The East Coast of Singapore stretches from the airport to the city and feels worlds away from the downtown high-rises. Locals prize it for 20 km of white sandy beach, sprawling parkland, and some of the country’s most iconic dishes, but visitors often glimpse only a sliver while heading to Changi Airport.

Beyond the shoreline, the area weaves together layers of heritage. The Malay heartland thrives in Geylang Serai, while Peranakan and Eurasian culture lingers in the shophouses of Katong and Joo Chiat. Even the rustic island of Pulau Ubin belongs to this side of Singapore — a quick escape into a more old-fashioned rhythm.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • East Coast Park — cycle, rollerblade, barbecue, or simply sprawl on the beach at Singapore’s favourite seaside playground.
  • Camp overnight — pitch a tent at Changi Beach Park, East Coast Park, or Pasir Ris Park; free permits are required and must be arranged at least 14 days in advance.
  • Hop a bumboat to Pulau Ubin — spend a day cycling gravel trails, spotting wildlife, and glimpsing Singapore as it was decades ago.
  • Geylang Serai stroll at dusk — during Ramadan the pasar malam night markets fill the streets with food, music, and celebration.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Katong and Joo Chiat — admire rows of pastel Peranakan shophouses, pop into craft shops, and absorb a neighbourhood where Eurasian, Vietnamese, and Straits Chinese cultures meet.
  • Changi Chapel and Museum — a sobering stop that commemorates the area’s World War II history and the prisoners of war held here.
  • Geylang Serai — the spiritual and cultural centre of Singapore’s Malay community; especially vibrant during Hari Raya Puasa.
  • Changi Beach Park — quiet and serene today, the shoreline once witnessed the Sook Ching massacre; a gentle spot for reflection by the water.

  • February through mid‑March — reliable weather window with average highs of 32°C and lower rain; good for beach days and cycling without peak-season crowds.
  • Mid‑July to mid‑August — another comfortable spell with temperatures around 30.4°C and similar rainfall; great for evening hawker-hopping.
  • Ramadan months — Geylang Serai comes alive after sunset with glowing night markets and some of the most atmospheric street food of the year.
  • Avoid Chinese New Year dips — while not extreme, the January shoulder can feel a touch wetter; still perfectly visitable if you pack an umbrella.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Use the East‑West MRT Line — it runs the spine of the East Coast from the city to Pasir Ris and the airport; the Thomson‑East Coast Line reaches Katong, but won’t connect to Changi until 2026.
  • Bus 36 for a scenic ride — slower than the train but connects the airport to Orchard Road via the coastal road; a cheap sightseeing alternative.
  • Book camping permits early — free permits for Changi, East Coast, and Pasir Ris parks require a Singapore ID holder to apply at least 14 days ahead.
  • Weekend drinking rules — Geylang is a Liquor Control Zone; public alcohol consumption outside licensed venues is banned on weekends and public holidays.
