About Republic of Singapore

Last updated Jun 14, 2026

Singapore is a dynamic city-state in Southeast Asia, celebrated as a global financial hub and a vibrant melting pot of cultures. A microcosm of Asia, it is populated by Chinese, Malays, Indians, and a large community of expatriates from around the world, all coexisting in a country that can be crossed in barely an hour. The nation has chosen a path of constant innovation, evident in landmarks like Marina Bay Sands, while a growing push to preserve local heritage reflects a delicate balance between the future and the past.

Founded as a British free port in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles, Singapore rapidly grew into one of Asia's busiest trading posts. Now one of the world's most prosperous countries, it boasts a legendary food scene with bustling hawker centers, a combination of skyscrapers with lush green spaces, and a reputation for exceptional safety and cleanliness. This "Garden City" offers a unique blend of high-end urban excitement and a medley of deep-rooted Asian traditions.

Weather Climate Summary

  • Located just north of the Equator, Singapore has a classic tropical climate without distinct seasons, characterized by heat, humidity, and high rainfall year-round. Daytime temperatures are typically hot, with averages around 31°C during the day and 24°C at night for most of the year, dipping slightly to 30°C in the daytime and 23°C at night during December and January. Rain is a near-daily occurrence, usually arriving in sudden, heavy showers that rarely last more than an hour. The most significant rainfall occurs during the northeast monsoon season (November to January), which can bring prolonged periods of continuous rain. Spectacular thunderstorms can happen at any time of day throughout the year. Between May and October, forest fires in neighboring Sumatra can cause unpredictable dense haze. Combined with a lack of wind and high nighttime temperatures, the weather can be exhausting for those unaccustomed to it.

Best Time to Visit

  • February to April are relatively drier and calmer periods between the monsoon seasons, offering more reliable weather for outdoor activities.
  • The northeast monsoon (November to January) brings the heaviest and most prolonged rainfall, but is also a festive season with exciting events like Christmas on Orchard Road.
  • Consider planning around major festivals for a cultural spectacle; Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb) is the biggest event, while Deepavali (Oct/Nov) decorates Little India brilliantly.
  • The Singapore Formula One Grand Prix (Sep/Oct) provides a unique night-race atmosphere but causes hotel prices to skyrocket and availability to plummet.
  • The haze season from May to October is unpredictable; check the National Environment Agency for updates during this period.
  • To avoid peak crowds and high prices, plan visits for the shoulder months outside of major holidays and large conventions.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Dress for the tropics: Wear light, sweat-wicking fabrics like linen or polyester, but always carry a sweater for the strong air-conditioning indoors.
  • Carry an umbrella at all times as protection from both intense sun and sudden, torrential downpours.
  • Plan for air-conditioned respites: Mix indoor visits (shopping malls, museums) with outdoor activities, especially after noon, to combat the exhausting heat.
  • Tap to pay for transport: A contactless credit/debit card is the easiest way to pay for the MRT and buses, which cover nearly all points of interest.
  • Respect local laws: Even small infractions like littering, jaywalking, and vaping can lead to heavy fines. Drug trafficking carries a mandatory death penalty.
  • Book accommodation early for big events like the F1 race, as demand surges and prices can double.
  • Complete the free SG Arrival Card online no earlier than three days before your arrival to speed up immigration.
