About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Zinder, the second-largest city in Niger, is a laid-back destination in the country's south. It served as the national capital until 1927 and retains a relaxed pace that contrasts with busier Niamey. The city offers a glimpse into everyday Nigerien life, centered around a sprawling market and a few low-key cultural sites.

The compact center is easily navigated by motorcycle taxi, and visitors can fill a couple of days browsing artisan workshops, attending events at the French Cultural Center, or simply soaking up the unhurried atmosphere.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Getting to Zinder by bus — The overland journey from Niamey takes 12 to 13 hours. SNTV and Air are recommended bus lines; bring snacks and be prepared for frequent but brief stops.
  • Getting around locally — Motorcycle taxis, known locally as cabou-cabous, are the primary transport. Fares are cheap (150–200 francs) and helmets are not provided.
  • Haggling in the markets — At the Artisan Center, vendors may initially quote nearly double the fair price. Polite negotiation is expected.
  • Evening safety — While Zinder is generally safe and relaxed, it is best to walk with a friend and stick to well-lit streets after dark.
  • Drink availability — Hard alcohol is difficult to find in this predominantly Muslim city; plan accordingly and enjoy the food and tea culture instead.
