About this place
Zhuhai (pronounced Jyūhói in Cantonese) is a coastal city in Guangdong Province, China. Its name, meaning Pearl Sea, reflects its position where the Pearl River meets the South China Sea. Designated a Special Economic Zone in 1980, Zhuhai has transformed from a cluster of fishing villages into a modern city of about 2.4 million people, while remaining one of China's cleanest and greenest urban centers. Known for its long coastline, waving palm trees, low population density, and many parks, Zhuhai has earned nicknames like the city of romance and the city of a hundred islands.
Strategically located in the Pearl River Delta, Zhuhai borders Macau to the south and is a short ferry or bridge ride from Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou. It serves as a gateway to Macau and a lively destination in its own right, with a colorful nightlife scene, diverse seafood, and easy access to a chain of islands that offer beaches, clear waters, and quiet escapes from the city. The city is also considered one of the best places in China to retire, thanks to its relaxed pace and ecological focus.
Zhuhai's districts each have their own character. Gongbei, near the Macau border, is the main tourist hub. Jida offers upscale shopping and hotels. Xiangzhou is the local shopping heart. Further north, Tangjia and Jinding have a working-class, down-to-earth feel. The northwestern Doumen district features hot springs and a historic Buddhist temple. For nature lovers, the city's many islands — including Dong'ao, Wailingding, Hebao, and Guishan — each have distinct personalities, from lively beaches to serene fishing villages.

Planning Tips
- Visas: Most travelers need a Chinese visa in advance. A 3-day SEZ visa is available on arrival at the Gongbei/Hengqin land borders or Jiuzhou ferry port for those arriving directly from Hong Kong or Macau, but eligibility varies by nationality. Check current requirements before you go.
- Getting around: Use the extensive ¥1 bus system (accepts Alipay or transit cards) or the sightseeing bus (¥3) for comfort. Taxis start at ¥10 for the first 3 km. Biking is excellent on flat, bike-lane-equipped streets.
- Island trips: Bring plenty of cash — some islands may not have ATMs. Ferries depart from Xiangzhou Port, and tickets are reasonably priced (¥85–170 depending on island and cabin class).
- Crossing the border: The Gongbei land border to Macau is open 06:00–01:00. Expect queues, especially on weekends. Allow at least 3 hours to go from Gongbei to Macau Airport on the return.
- Nightlife: Lianhua Lu (Walking Street) in Gongbei is a must-see at night for its open-air bar stalls. Bars are open until 03:00 or later. Stay aware of your belongings in crowded areas.
- Safety: Tap water is not drinkable. Avoid undercooked meats. Motorcycles are illegal in Xiangzhou District. Prostitution is illegal in China, and both parties are subject to prosecution.
