About this place
Zhucheng is a county-level city in southeastern Shandong Province, where the Taiyi Mountains meet the Jiaowei Plain. It’s best known as ‘Dinosaur City’ — one of several Chinese cities holding that title — thanks to the extraordinary number of dinosaur fossils unearthed here, including Asia’s largest tyrannosaur, Zhuchengtyrannus magnus. With a population of around one million, Zhucheng also carries a legend linking it to the birth of Emperor Shun.
For travelers, the city serves as a manageable base with straightforward transport links to the Shandong Peninsula. Its core draw is prehistoric discovery, complemented by local festivals and a modest, walkable central area. While not a sprawling tourist hub, it rewards those curious about geology, paleontology, or a slice of everyday Shandong life.
