About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Zhoukou, in eastern Henan Province, sits at the meeting point of the Sha and Ying Rivers, which gave it the historic nickname “Central Plains Port City.” With a population exceeding 9 million and a heritage stretching back to the ancient Chen and Cai states, it is widely regarded as the birthplace of Laozi, the founder of Taoism. Today, it functions as a steady regional hub for agriculture, commerce, and transport, connected by a growing network of highways, railways, and waterways.

The city administers two urban districts—Chuanhui and Huaiyang—along with one county-level city and several counties. Recent urbanization is visible in areas like Lin’gang New City, yet the city center around Wuyi Square retains a practical, local feel where evening markets and street food reflect everyday life. For travelers interested in early Chinese civilization, mythology, and philosophy, Zhoukou offers a less-touristed look at the Central Plains region.
