About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Zhongshan (中山) is a city in Guangdong Province, situated on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary, just north of Zhuhai. It's best known as the birthplace of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, and was renamed in his honor in 1925. Unlike the bustling metropolises of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Zhongshan offers a quieter pace of life with a vibrant downtown river area, beautiful Buddhist temples, and surrounding farmland and small towns that hint at its agricultural roots.

The city covers an area of 1,800 km² with a permanent population of about 4.4 million (2020). It has a subtropical humid climate with mild winters and warm, humid summers. Though a manufacturing center like much of the Pearl River Delta, Zhongshan remains an affordable place to live and work, particularly compared to its larger neighbors. Hong Kong is accessible by ferry, and Macau via Zhuhai, making it a convenient base for exploring the wider region.

Zhongshan is a linguistically diverse city; Cantonese is the lingua franca, though Mandarin is widely understood. English is not widely spoken, so a phrasebook or translation app can be helpful.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Arrange your Chinese visa before departure from your country of origin; it can be obtained at any Chinese consulate.
  • For ferry arrivals from Hong Kong International Airport, proceed directly to the ticket counter without passing through Hong Kong immigration or customs.
  • Use city buses to reach most scenic spots — have exact change of ¥2 for standard routes, and up to ¥10 for longer ones.
  • If shopping for antique furniture, bargain firmly and consider hiring a local to help negotiate.
  • Carry a translation app or phrasebook, as English is not widely spoken outside of some younger people or expat bars.
  • Check ferry schedules in advance; services to/from Hong Kong, Macau, and Shenzhen run multiple times daily but may have limited late-night departures.
