About this place

Zhenjiang is a historically rich city in Jiangsu province, perched on the southern bank of the Yangtze River. For centuries, it served as a vital entrepôt at the crossroads of the Grand Canal and the Yangtze, a role that left behind a fascinating blend of medieval Chinese temples and 19th-century European-style architecture in its preserved quarters. Its most famous landmark, Jinshan Temple, sits dramatically on a hill overlooking the water and is celebrated across China as the setting for the legendary "Tale of the White Snake."

The city also served as the capital of Jiangsu province from 1928 to 1949, leaving a legacy of elegant early-20th-century homes along Boxian Road. Once a treaty port with a British concession, Zhenjiang still bears traces of its international past, including the former home of American writer Pearl Buck. Together with nearby Yangzhou, it is also the heartland of Zhen-Yang cuisine, a refined culinary tradition prized for its subtle flavors and emphasis on fresh, local ingredients.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Stroll through historic parks — Each of Zhenjiang's main parks, Jinshan, Beigushan, and Jiaoshan, is steeped in legend. Jinshan is famously the setting of the "Tale of the White Snake," while Beigushan is tied to pivotal Three Kingdoms history.
  • Climb a pagoda — Several scenic parks feature pagodas that visitors can ascend for an additional fee, rewarding you with panoramic views over the city and waterways.
  • Boat on Jinshan Lake — Rent a paddle or electric boat at Jinshan Park for a relaxing outing on the lake that surrounds the legendary temple mountain.
  • Ride the Yangtze ferry — For just ¥3, take the local ferry across the river to Yangzhou. It's a scenic and affordable way to view the city's waterfront and connect to a neighboring historic city.
  • Explore Zhen-Yang cuisine — Sample the area's celebrated culinary tradition in local restaurants, which focuses on refined, light flavors and the freshest freshwater fish, crab, and shellfish, best paired with the city's own famous vinegar.

  • Jinshan Park — The city's iconic sight, known for its spectacular "mountain encompassed by monasteries" setting and as the legendary backdrop for the "Tale of the White Snake."
  • Jiaoshan Park — Located on a peaceful island, this park flips the script with "monasteries encompassed by mountains" and holds iron cannons from the fortifications used to resist a 19th-century British invasion.
  • Beigushan Park — A historic stronghold near the Yangtze where, legend says, the rulers Liu Bei and Sun Quan rode horses together to forge a world-changing alliance during the Three Kingdoms period.
  • Boxian Road architecture — Walk this street to see well-preserved elegant houses from Zhenjiang's stint as Jiangsu's provincial capital (1928–1949).
  • British concession-era buildings — Scattered throughout the preserved quarter are English-style houses and public buildings from the 19th-century treaty port era, including the former home of writer Pearl Buck.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Budget for park entry fees — Major parks charge an entrance fee, and climbing the pagodas within them requires an extra ticket. Budget roughly ¥30-50 per park, plus about ¥10 for a pagoda climb.
  • Use taxis for convenience — Taxis are an affordable and efficient way to reach most areas of the city. A trip from the main railway station to most sights will likely cost less than ¥30.
  • Plan for airport transfers — The most reliable major airport is in Nanjing. If arriving at the smaller Changzhou airport, note that direct buses to Zhenjiang run only every 2–3 hours during the day.
  • Leverage the rail network — Zhenjiang's three railway stations provide excellent connections. Use the older station for long-distance conventional trains and the high-speed stations for quick access along the Shanghai-Nanjing corridor.
  • Enjoy the vinegar culture — Zhenjiang produces China's most famous vinegar. Seek out steamed dumplings served with local vinegar, available on nearly every block, for a true taste of the city.
