About this place
Zhengzhou (郑州) is the capital of Henan Province, situated on the south bank of the Yellow River in central China. Historically an important site dating back to the Shang Dynasty over 3,600 years ago, the city was selected for major development after 1949 and has grown into a key national transportation hub. With a population of over 12.8 million, it's a rapidly expanding metropolis known for its green spaces, logical urban layout, and role as a gateway to cultural treasures like the Shaolin Temple, Kaifeng, and Luoyang.
Zhengzhou is also recognized as the birthplace of the legendary ancestor Xuanyuan Huangdi and a significant origin point for Shaolin martial arts and Legalist thought. The nearby Mount Song (Songshan) is considered the "Center of Heaven and Earth" in ancient Chinese cosmology and features eight UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites, including the Shaolin Temple and Songyang Academy. The city itself boasts an impressive number of state-level key cultural heritage sites, ranking third nationally.

Planning Tips
- Zhengzhou has two main train stations — confirm which one your train uses to avoid confusion.
- The metro is efficient and affordable; single-trip tickets cost ¥2–9. Consider getting a rechargeable Lv Cheng Tong card for a 5% discount on fares.
- For airport transfers, the metro's Chengjiao line (Line 2 suburban extension) runs until about 22:00. Taxis to the airport cost around ¥120–140.
- Bargaining is common at the antique market — paying about half the initial quoted price is considered a fair deal.
- Keep your wallet in a front pocket, especially on crowded buses and in markets, due to the risk of pickpocketing.
