About this place
Zhangye is a city in Gansu Province that combines Silk Road history with remarkable natural scenery. Once known as Ganzhou and later controlled by Kublai Khan, the city now serves as a practical base for exploring the surrounding desert landscapes.
With a population of about 1.1 million, Zhangye feels spacious and typically northern Chinese in layout, where blocks are long and the climate can be extreme. Visitors are drawn here primarily for the striking mountain scenery nearby, while the city itself offers a glimpse of regional products and minority Yugu culture.

Planning Tips
- Bring exact change for buses — city bus fare is ¥1 and requires cash; foreign visitors cannot register for a transit card via Alipay as of 2026.
- Book a private car for out-of-town sites — arrange through your hotel or a travel agency to visit the Danxia formations and other scenic areas outside the city.
- Consider nearby airport hubs — flying into Lanzhou or Xining and taking a high-speed train to Zhangye is often more convenient than using the local airport.
- Dress for desert extremes — pack sun protection for summer and layers for chilly early mornings even within the main travel season.
