About this place
Zaporizhzhia is a major industrial and cultural city on the Dnieper River in southeastern Ukraine. Its name, meaning "beyond the rapids," reflects a dramatic past when the river churned over granite cliffs — now tamed by the monumental Dniproges Dam, one of Europe's largest when built.
The city is best known for Khortytsia Island, a sprawling river island rich in both ancient history and sweeping natural scenery.
