About this place
Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, situated in the country's central region. The city charms visitors with a medieval upper town (Gornji Grad) featuring cobbled streets and architecture reminiscent of other Central European capitals like Vienna and Prague. With a metropolitan population of around 1.1 million (2021), Zagreb is a vibrant destination that attracted over a million tourists in 2017, many from Austria, Germany, and Italy.
The city is known for its lively Advent festival from December to early January, bringing additional cultural and gastronomic energy. Zagreb is split roughly into the historic Upper Town (medieval core) and Lower Town (Donji Grad), which is home to most of the major museums, galleries, and theaters arrayed along the Lenuci Horseshoe. Beyond its historic heart, the city extends north into the Medvednica mountains and south across the Sava River into modern Novi Zagreb.

Planning Tips
- Purchase public transport tickets (including the Zagreb Card for unlimited travel) from newsstands or via the MOJ ZET app to save money and time.
- Use the Zagreb Card for free public transport and discounts at many museums, restaurants, and shops.
- For airport transfers, the Pleso prijevoz bus runs frequently, or you can take the cheaper local ZET bus 290.
- Learn a few basic Croatian phrases (molim, hvala, oprostite) — English is common among younger people, but a little local effort goes a long way.
