About this place
Tell Basta, the ancient city of Bubastis, lies just outside Zagazig in the Nile Delta, about 80 km northeast of Cairo. It was once the cult center for the cat goddess Bastet and a royal residence during the 22nd dynasty, reaching its peak around the 10th century BC. Though now largely in ruins, the site holds deep significance for both ancient Egyptian history and Christian pilgrimage tradition—the Holy Family is said to have stopped here during their exile in Egypt.
The site is not yet a developed tourist highlight. The temple is essentially ruined, but you can still view the intact, protected cat tombs that serve as the principal depository of cat mummies in Egypt. A visit here feels like a genuine archaeological encounter rather than a polished tourist experience, though its proximity to a military base means independent travelers should be prepared for some extra formalities.

Things to See
- Cat tombs — the principal depository of cat mummies in Egypt, these protected underground chambers remain intact and are the site's most remarkable feature.
- Temple ruins of Bastet — though largely destroyed, the foundations and scattered remnants give a sense of the temple complex that once honored the cat goddess here.
- Bastet roundabout in Zagazig — a statue of the cat goddess stands at the town's central roundabout, marking your proximity to the site and offering a quick photo stop.

Best Time to Visit
- Early April to mid‑May — comfortable temperatures around 22.3°C with very low cloud cover and no rain, ideal for exploring the open site.
- Late August through November — warm but generally pleasant, averaging 25°C and similarly dry with abundant sunshine for unhurried visits.
- Avoid peak summer heat — June through August can be extremely hot, making exposed archaeological ruins uncomfortable for prolonged outdoor sightseeing.

Planning Tips
- Hire a private driver or taxi — a day hire from Cairo is the most reliable way to reach the site, but be prepared that your driver may need to ask for local directions.
- Carry small notes for tips — you are likely to get an armed police escort out of town, and a tip at the end of your visit is suggested.
- Be ready for security formalities — the adjacent military base means officials will want to know why you are there; a helpful driver can smooth the way.
- Bring sun protection and water — with little shade on site, even in comfortable seasons, you will need a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water.
