About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Xuzhou (徐州) sits at the northern tip of Jiangsu province, where it borders Anhui, and is home to about 2.6 million people. It is a city of contrasts — narrow alleys and old neighborhood markets sit alongside the same department stores and chain restaurants found across China. The historic waterway heritage and local food culture give it a character all its own.

Getting here is straightforward by train, but travelers should be careful not to confuse Xuzhou (徐州) with the much more famous Suzhou (苏州) near Shanghai — the names sound alike. Once in town, a small metro system and cheap urban buses make getting around simple, while the city rewards those who wander its backstreets, waterfront paths, and no-frills eating spots.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Wander the old downtown neighborhoods — narrow alleys lead to century-old wet markets, one-room restaurants without menus, arcades in scavenged brick huts, and pockets of street life that feel far from modern China.
  • Stroll along the New Yellow River — a diverted stretch of the Yellow River created by the 1938 floods, now a place to have your fortune told, buy raw tobacco, grab a bite, and catch traveling musicians performing on traditional instruments.
  • Explore the city's food alleys — seek out backstreet eateries for local specialties, watch cooks work over open flames, and join locals who have been breakfasting at the same spots for decades.
  • Ride the metro — Line 1 opened in 2019 and connects both railway stations east to west, making it easy to explore different parts of the city.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Old downtown neighborhoods — tucked behind the modern commercial core, these areas reveal a grittier, more intimate side of Xuzhou with migrant worker encampments, traveling farmers selling goods, and impromptu street-side commerce.
  • New Yellow River path — walk along this historic waterway, where the cauldron cooking tradition of local fisherfolk once thrived and street musicians still perform.
  • Downtown commercial squares — while identical to what you would find in any Chinese city of this size, the massive open squares and department store clusters offer a snapshot of contemporary urban life in northern Jiangsu.

  • Mid-April to mid-June — average temperatures around 20.6°C with comfortable humidity and modest rainfall make this the most pleasant window for walking and outdoor exploration.
  • Late August to early November — averages near 19.6°C with slightly clearer skies and minimal precipitation; excellent for street food crawls and riverside strolls.
  • Avoid peak summer (July–August) — hot, sticky conditions dominate, testing your stamina for long days on foot.
  • Winter (December–February) — temperatures can drop below freezing; less ideal for the neighborhood wanders that define the Xuzhou experience.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Ticket caution — written Chinese helps at the train station; use 徐州 to be sure you buy the right ticket and not a seat to Suzhou.
  • Hotel strategy — ask to see the room before agreeing to stay (a polite "kan kan" and a smile works); budget joints near the train station cluster around ¥80 while most city hotels charge about ¥200.
  • Metro access — Line 1 connects both Xuzhou Station (east of downtown) and Xuzhou East Station (eastern outskirts), making it straightforward to reach your lodging after arriving by rail.
  • Food adventuring — many of the best eating experiences are in small, no-menu restaurants; pointing at other tables' dishes or simply letting the cook tell you what is available is the norm.
