About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Jinzhong is a prefecture-level city in central Shanxi Province, widely regarded as the cradle of Jin merchant (Jin Shang) culture. In 1824, China's first financial institution, Rishengchang, was founded here, and the region's legacy of commerce has left behind a remarkable collection of historic cities, family compounds, and cultural traditions. The Ancient City of Pingyao, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, anchors a tourism landscape that also includes the old cities of Taigu, Qi County, and Yuci, as well as the famous "six courtyards" — grand manor houses that once belonged to powerful merchant families.

Beyond its architectural heritage, Jinzhong preserves deep-rooted folk traditions, including the legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl and the origin of the Cold Food Festival. The city offers travelers a concentrated look at Shanxi's historic merchant culture, with compact distances and good connections to the provincial capital, Taiyuan, just 32 kilometers away.
