About this place
Yongzhou, known historically as Lingling, is a prefecture-level city on the Xiang River in southern Hunan province. It serves as the gateway to the Xiangnan region, an area defined by lush mountains, karst caves, and a rich literary heritage. The city itself is a comfortable base, but the real draw lies in the rural counties, where ancient villages preserve a unique history, particularly the secret Nüshu script once used exclusively by local women.
The region combines the natural landscapes characteristic of southern China with deep cultural history that dates back over two millennia. Once part of the ancient state of Chu, Yongzhou evolved through the dynasties as a center of commerce and culture. Today, visitors are drawn to its mix of subtropical scenery and authentic local life, from trying regional specialties to walking along the historic Xiang River.
