About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Yokosuka is a major port city in Kanagawa Prefecture, where a long naval history shapes the local atmosphere. Commodore Matthew Perry’s 1850s landing kicked off Japan’s modernization, and today the city is home to a prominent U.S. and Japanese naval facility — one reason the city was largely spared from World War II bombing.

With a population of roughly 420,000, Yokosuka balances its international military community with distinctly local flavors. The signature dish is Navy curry, a tradition inherited from the British and Imperial Japanese navies, while the surrounding Miura Peninsula contributes fresh produce like Miura daikon radish. The city’s compact core puts shops, restaurants, and nightlife within easy reach of both main train stations.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Yokosuka Naval Base — headquarters of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, the base shapes the city’s international character. While normally closed to casual visitors, it opens for occasional public events such as the annual Friendship Day, fireworks displays, and Halloween festivities.
  • Kurihama waterfront — the port district connects to Kanayako and the Izu Islands, offering ferry access during low season and glimpses of a working harbor framed by the Miura Peninsula’s green hills.
  • City-center shopping arcades — the Saikaya department store, More's City plaza, and Avenue 580 arcade combine retail browsing with food halls and restaurant floors, giving visitors a feel for local daily life.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Station choice matters — the centrally located Keikyu Yokosuka-Chuo station puts you closest to shops, restaurants, and the Honch, while JR Yokosuka station sits about 2.5 km northwest and requires a short bus or taxi ride to the center.
  • Use a Pasmo or Suica card on buses — board at the rear door, take a numbered ticket if paying cash, and tap off at the front. The fare display matches the number on your ticket.
  • Access from airports — from Haneda, Keikyu limited express trains reach Yokosuka-Chuo in under an hour (¥810). Narita travelers can change at Shinagawa to Keikyu, or take a slower direct JR train to JR Yokosuka station.
  • Look for event days to tour the base — the naval base is generally closed, but public events like fireworks or Halloween parties grant temporary access.
  • Taxis are plentiful but costly — ¥710 for the first two kilometers, with higher fares at night. Airport or intercity train connections are usually a better value.
