About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Yokohama, Japan's second-largest city, sits on the western coast of Tokyo Bay just south of Tokyo, forming part of the giant Tokyo conurbation. From a small fishing village, it grew into a bustling port city after the opening of Japan in 1854 and the signing of the Kanagawa Treaty. Yokohama led Japan's modernization during the Meiji Restoration — it was the site of the country's first train line, connecting Tokyo and Yokohama. While the city was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the firebombings of World War II, it retains its international maritime character today.

The city offers a blend of 19th-century history and modern attractions. The Minato Mirai 21 district is the modern harborfront center, anchored by the iconic Landmark Tower (Japan's second-tallest building). Historic areas like Bashamichi and Nihon Ōdori preserve the Western-influenced architecture and street lighting from the early days of foreign trade. Yokohama is also home to one of the world's largest Chinatowns, with over 200 restaurants and a lively street-food scene.

Yokohama is easily accessible from Tokyo — just 25–30 minutes by train — and is well-connected by train, subway, bus, and even water taxi. The multilingual official visitors guide site can help you plan your itinerary and navigate the city.
