About this place
Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, rises from the banks of the Yellow River as a fascinating blend of ancient Silk Road history and modern Chinese development. Once the heart of the Western Xia kingdom, the "Phoenix City" is one of the few places in China where the Hui Muslim ethnic minority governs, making it a unique cultural treasure rich with Chinese-Muslim heritage.
The city is divided between a bustling new city, centered around the main train station and home to universities and industry, and the more traditional old city 8 km to the east. Rapid growth has drawn these two parts together, creating a dynamic urban landscape that serves as a gateway between western cities like Urumqi and eastern hubs such as Beijing.
