About this place
Yichang sits at the eastern gateway of the famed Three Gorges in Hubei Province, just downstream from the massive Three Gorges Dam. Home to roughly 1.5 million people within the city proper, it acts as the traditional endpoint for downstream Yangtze River cruises and is well-connected by high-speed rail along China's main east-west line linking Shanghai, Wuhan, Chongqing, and Chengdu.
The city's ancient name, Yiling, points to its deep historical roots, though today Yichang is a modern transport hub with a relaxed riverside atmosphere. The banks of the Yangtze are lined with a long, vibrant park where locals gather to exercise, dance, and socialize, offering excellent views of the illuminated hillsides across the water.

Things to Do
- Stroll or cycle the east bank park — A lengthy green corridor runs from the southern Yangtze bridge to the smaller dam in the north, with dedicated lanes for both walking and biking using the floating blue Hello bikes found around town.
- Catch the evening riverside scene — Head to the riverfront in the late afternoon to watch locals work out, dance, and play sports, and stay after dark to see the hills on the opposite bank light up.
- Take a luxury Yangtze River cruise — Multi-night cruises sail between Yichang and Chongqing, with typical itineraries including shore excursions to Fengdu, Shennong Stream or the Lesser Three Gorges, and the Three Gorges Dam, plus onboard meals.
