About this place

Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, is a city of striking contrasts and deep history. Often called the 'Pink City' for the rosy volcanic tufa stone used in its buildings, it is a showcase of early Soviet architecture master-planned by Alexander Tamanyan into a grand, walkable center of wide avenues, concentric circles, and abundant parks. While the settlement dates back 2,800 years to the Erebuni fortress, today's cityscape is largely a 20th-century creation, having grown from a small town of 20,000 a century ago into a vibrant metropolis of over a million people.

The city serves as the cultural and social heart of the Armenian world. Its compact center is dense with museums, galleries, and public institutions, as well as a lively café culture that spills onto the sidewalks. The predominant religion is Christianity, and Armenia holds the distinction of being the first nation to adopt it as a state religion in 301 AD, a heritage reflected in the city's traditional Armenian Apostolic churches.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Master the local transport: Use the gg or Yandex.Taxi apps for fair taxi prices. For public buses, buy a transport card and wait up to 15 minutes for it to activate.
  • Beware of taxi scams: Never believe a driver who says there is no bus to your destination. Insist on the meter being used, and a trip within the center should cost 600–1,000 dram.
  • Export souvenirs legally: If buying an old rug, negotiate for the seller to provide an official export certificate from the Ministry of Culture to avoid confiscation.
  • Carry coins for taxis: Drivers often claim to have no change, so having small denominations will help you avoid being overcharged.
  • Dress for winter restrictions: If visiting in winter, prepare for icy sidewalks and smoky indoor spaces, which can make getting around and dining out less pleasant.
  • Plan for cash: While US dollars and credit cards are often accepted, having Armenian dram from one of the city's many ATMs is essential for smaller vendors and transport.
