About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Yenagoa is the capital of Bayelsa State in Nigeria's South South region, home to around 350,000 people. Its name comes from three main local government areas — Brass (BALGA), Yenagoa (YELGA), and Sagbama (SALGA). The first major settlers are the Ijaw people, and the city is surrounded by swamps, mangroves, and tropical rainforest.

Much of Yenagoa is accessible by water, which shapes daily life and transport. The city was carved out of Rivers State in 1996 and serves as a gateway to the wider Niger Delta region.
