About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Yekaterinburg is Russia's fourth-largest city, a major industrial and cultural hub on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains. Founded in 1723 by Peter the Great as a metallurgical center, it grew rapidly during World War II and is now home to over 1.3 million people. The city sits astride the symbolic border between Europe and Asia, marked by several monuments.

The city's history is deeply layered: it was renamed Sverdlovsk during the Soviet era and is the site where the last Russian tsar and his family were executed in 1918. Today, the Church on the Blood stands on that spot. Yekaterinburg blends its industrial roots with a vibrant cultural scene, striking Soviet-era architecture, and easy access to the nearby Urals.
