About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Yangzhou is a historic city in Jiangsu province with a legacy stretching back over 2,500 years. Once a thriving trading center for salt, rice, and silk, it is famously associated with Marco Polo, who spent several years here in the late 13th century. Today, the city of over one million residents is crisscrossed by a network of canals, from the Grand Canal to small neighborhood waterways, which trace the outlines of ancient city walls.

The city’s symbolic heart is the Wenchang Pavilion, a historic building standing at the central intersection of Wenchang Road and Wenhe Road. Modern Yangzhou spreads outward from this core, blending contemporary neighborhoods, upscale shopping, and dining with pockets of old-city charm. To the northwest, a series of slender lakes and rivers are home to green spaces, historic monuments, and the popular Slender West Lake Scenic Area.
