About this place
Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) is Myanmar's largest city and its economic hub. Until 2005, it served as the country's capital, a role now filled by Naypyidaw. Despite this change, Yangon remains the most cosmopolitan city in Myanmar, offering nightlife, quality international restaurants, and numerous museums.
The city is a fascinating blend of British, Burmese, Chinese, and Indian influences. Its most striking feature is its well-preserved colonial architecture, a rare example of a 19th-century British colonial capital in Asia. While many buildings had fallen into decay, recent years have seen new skyscrapers rise and large-scale restoration efforts begin on former government buildings like the Secretariat.
Yangon's identity is deeply tied to the Shwedagon Pagoda, a magnificent golden stupa that dominates the skyline. The city is a bustling and vibrant place where ancient traditions meet modernity, offering a unique and culturally rich experience for travelers.

Planning Tips
- Cash is king: Bring plenty of fresh, crisp US dollars (especially US$100 and US$50 notes) as they are widely accepted and offer better exchange rates. Check for any blemishes as they may be refused.
- Visas are required: Most nationalities need a visa to enter Myanmar. Apply for an e-visa online before you travel to save time at the airport.
- Getting from the airport: The easiest way is a fixed-price taxi from the pre-paid counter. Grab is also a reliable and safe option.
- Electricity is unreliable: Choose a hotel with its own generator, especially mid-range options, to ensure power during frequent outages.
- Dress respectfully: When visiting pagodas and temples, you must cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes and socks before entering.
- Buy a local SIM card: They are cheap and provide reliable internet access, which is useful for maps, translation, and ride-hailing apps like Grab.
- Learn a few phrases: Knowing some basic Burmese (e.g., "mingalaba" for hello) will be appreciated, though many people in the tourist industry speak some English.
