About this place
Yancheng (盐城), whose name means "Salt City," is a prefecture-level city on the coast of Jiangsu Province with a history stretching back to 119 BC. Once a major salt-producing center, today it draws visitors for its vast coastal wetlands, rare wildlife, and relaxed pace compared to China’s larger metropolises. The region is home to the world’s largest coastal wetlands and holds a UNESCO natural world heritage designation for its migratory bird sanctuaries along the Yellow Sea–Bohai Gulf.
Nature lovers will find a lot to explore here. The Yancheng National Rare Birds Nature Reserve shelters endangered red-crowned cranes and milu deer, while Dongtai Huanghai Forest Park offers cycling and hiking trails. Beyond wildlife, the city rewards curiosity with salt-production heritage, local crafts, and a seafood-focused cuisine anchored by specialties like saltwater duck and Dafeng crab.
