About this place

Last updated Aug 2, 2026

Yamaguchi, the capital of Yamaguchi Prefecture at the western tip of Honshu, is a compact city with a remarkably rich history. Often called "Kyoto in the West," it flourished as a cultural and political center during the medieval period under the powerful Ouchi clan. The city was carefully planned and, for a time, even served as a de facto capital of Japan when Kyoto was devastated by war. Today, it is a quiet, elegant city that rewards visitors with well-preserved historical sites and a refined atmosphere.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 2, 2026
  • Navigating the stations — budget time and connection planning for the 15-25 minute local train ride between Shin-Yamaguchi Shinkansen stop and central Yamaguchi Station.
  • Getting around town — consider renting a bicycle across from Yamaguchi Station or using the local bus to cover the distance between scattered historical sites.
  • Accommodation base — staying in the Yuda Onsen area offers hot spring access but look for hotels that provide shuttle transfers to Shin-Yamaguchi Station.
  • Rail passes — Japan Rail Pass holders should be mindful to board Sakura or Hikari Shinkansen services, not the slightly faster Nozomi, which may require a train change when coming from east of Osaka.
