About this place
Ya'an, historically known as Yucheng, is a prefecture-level city in Sichuan Province, situated about 120 km southwest of Chengdu on the Sichuan-Tibet highway. It lies on the mountainous western edge of the Sichuan Basin and has long served as an important crossroads — once a gateway on the ancient Southern Silk Road and the former capital of Xikang Province. Today, it is an emerging tourist city with a population of over one million.
The city carries several evocative nicknames: the "rainy city" for its abundant precipitation, and the "gateway to Tibet" for its strategic position. Surrounded by lush landscapes, it is also celebrated as the hometown of the giant panda, and the territory of Mengding Mountain, which is revered as a birthplace of the world's tea culture and civilization.
