About this place
Xinyang is a city of over a million residents in southern Henan province, often called the "southern gate of Henan." Sitting near the Hubei border, it shares cultural and economic ties with both provinces and has a history stretching back to the Western Zhou Dynasty, when it was the fief of Shen Bo. The city was once known as Yiyang and is the birthplace of the famous story of Sima Guang smashing the jar.
Modern Xinyang functions as a regional hub with a blend of business, shopping, and local tourism. The city center offers a range of hotels, while mobile booking apps make it easy to find affordable minsu (guesthouses) for a more local experience. Getting around is straightforward with inexpensive taxis and a bike-share system accessible via popular Chinese apps.
