About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Xichang, the capital of the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southern Sichuan, is a compact city prized for its perpetual spring-like climate and role as a strategic stopover between Chengdu and Kunming. Nicknamed China Moon City and China Space City, it is best known for the Xichang Satellite Launch Center northwest of town. The surrounding area blends Yi culture with highland scenery, making it an appealing break on a longer Sichuan–Yunnan itinerary. Travelers often use Xichang as a base for a side trip to Lugu Lake, roughly six hours west, or simply to enjoy the relaxed pace, lakeside parks, and distinctive local cuisine.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Use local buses to get around — route 6 reaches Jianchang Ancient City, while the 108 and 106 Huanhu buses connect the railway station to Qionghai Lake, Lushan, and Dashiban Ancient Village.
  • Dress in layers — night-time temperatures can drop sharply even in summer, so a warm layer is useful for early mornings and evenings.
  • Book festival stays early — accommodation fills quickly during the Torch Festival (end of July) and Yi Year (autumn); reserve ahead if your dates align.
  • Respect wildlife on Lushan — carry food in a secure bag and avoid teasing the monkeys to prevent scuffles.
  • Try local specialties — don't miss side-fried potatoes, spicy fish fillet from the fishing village, or Liangshan snow yogurt as a refreshing barbecue pairing.
