About this place
Gulangyu is a car-free island just off the coast of Xiamen, reachable by a short ferry ride from downtown. With a population of around 17,000 and an area of about 2 km², it served as a foreign enclave from the 1840s until the 1930s and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is known for its quiet, pedestrian-only streets (cars, motorcycles, and bicycles are banned), colonial-era architecture, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels a world away from mainland China.
Today, Gulangyu is a major tourist destination, particularly popular with Chinese visitors who come to explore its heritage buildings, museums, and gardens. The island is sometimes called "Piano Island" for its long musical tradition—pianos have been present since the 1840s, and you'll often hear classical piano music playing in the streets. The old colonial buildings have been repurposed as restaurants, guesthouses, and shops, making it a charming place to wander for a day or two.
