About this place
Xanthi is the capital of the Xanthi regional unit in Western Thrace, northern Greece. The city bears the marks of a turbulent regional history, including Ottoman rule from 1361, but today it is best known for its youthful energy and vibrant old town.
Unlike many other parts of Greece, Western Thrace was exempt from the 1923 population exchange with Turkey, giving the area a distinctive multicultural character. The compact city center is easy to explore on foot, and its large university population fuels a lively nightlife scene centered around the picturesque old quarter.
