About this place
Wuppertal combines industrial heritage with hillside charm in a way few German cities can match. Formed in 1929 from a merger of Barmen and Elberfeld, it feels remarkably cohesive today — linked by the world’s oldest operational monorail, the Schwebebahn, which glides above the Wupper River and connects both former centers.
Settlement along the river dates to 1161, but the city is thoroughly modern in spirit. It’s the birthplace of Friedrich Engels, and while history runs deep, Wuppertal’s real draw is its striking valley setting: steep streets, hundreds of public stairs, and leafy hillside neighborhoods that reward a good climb with sweeping views.

Things to Do
- Schwebebahn ride — Glide above the Wupper on the world’s oldest monorail system; it’s both practical transit and a landmark experience.
- Luisenviertel evening out — Explore the Old Town of Elberfeld’s cafe-and-restaurant quarter, with Katzengold as the best-known anchor.
- Sample local beer — Try the Wupper Hell or Wupper Dunkel exclusively at Wuppertaler Brauhaus, a converted swimming pool in Barmen.

Planning Tips
- Buy tickets before boarding — No barriers exist at Schwebebahn stops, but undercover checks are common; purchase VRR tickets from machines, buses, or apps.
- Park in the valley — Driving means dealing with steep gradients and tight parking; leave your car in a garage and use public transport instead.
- Stay in Elberfeld — Most hotels are concentrated in the main district; book early during Düsseldorf trade-fair periods for the best rates.
- Check the weather — With cloud cover around 63.9%, layering and a rain layer are wise even in the prime travel window.
