About this place
Wonju is a city of about 365,000 people in Gangwon province, east of Seoul, that blends a long administrative history with a modern role as a transportation and cultural hub. Once the provincial capital during the Joseon dynasty, it has grown into a convenient gateway served by KTX high-speed rail and an extensive express-bus network. Today the city promotes itself as a literature and cultural city, with museums and events that highlight its heritage.
The surrounding region offers rolling inland scenery and a continental climate that brings distinct seasons. Visitors often use Wonju as a practical base for exploring Gangwon, but the city itself rewards a short stay with its local food scene and easy-going pace.

Best Time to Visit
- Late April to late June (spring) — Pleasant temperatures around 18.3°C on average, low rainfall, and generous sunshine make this a comfortable window for walking the city and nearby countryside.
- September and October (autumn) — Cool, dry conditions with average temperatures near 16.9°C and clear skies; the Hanu Festival in October is an extra draw.
- Avoid July–August unless you are prepared for rain — The monsoon peaks in July, with heavy precipitation and sticky heat that can disrupt outdoor plans.
- Winter is workable for cold-weather travelers — January and February are cold with occasional snow, but if you dress warmly and stick to indoor cultural activities, it remains a viable visit.

Planning Tips
- Use the bus terminal area for lodging and transit — Affordable motels cluster right behind the Wonju bus terminal, and buses from there reach most major Korean cities.
- Pack for the season — Waterproof gear and light clothing in summer, layered warm coats and boots in winter, and comfortable layers in spring and autumn will cover the local conditions.
- Carry a T-money card — Local city buses cost ₩1,100, but passengers using a T-money card pay less and get free transfers within one hour.
- Note that English-language resources may be limited — Bus timetable information is mainly available in Korean on the city website, so a translation app can help with onward planning.
