About this place
Wollongong is New South Wales' third-largest city, stretched along a narrow coastal plain where the Illawarra escarpment meets the Pacific Ocean. Its geography defines the experience — the city is never more than roughly 6 km wide but extends over 40 km from north to south, connecting a chain of beachside towns from Stanwell Park down toward Kiama.
Once built on coal and steel, Wollongong retains its working industrial heritage at Port Kembla while diversifying into education, technology, and tourism. The University of Wollongong brings a student energy, and post-war migration has created a multicultural food scene with strong Mediterranean, Indian, and Asian influences. Beaches, lookouts, and easy day trips into the escarpment give the city a relaxed coastal character distinct from Sydney, only 90 minutes north.

Things to Do
- Surfing and swimming — choose from 17 surf beaches along the coast, generally less crowded than Sydney equivalents, with free foreshore parking and good public transport access.
- Coastal cycling — a mostly off-road 60 km bike path runs from Bulli to Kiama, hugging beaches and headlands with train connections for the return trip.
- Lap and leisure pools — Beaton Park on Foley Street offers pools for lap swimming and kids' splash areas when the surf isn't appealing.
- Escarpment walks — the steep backdrop of the Illawarra escarpment provides hiking trails and lookouts with sweeping views over the coastline and city.
- Dapto markets and events — Sunday flea markets draw bargain hunters, while the annual September Street Fair and Dapto Show bring community festivities.

Things to See
- Sea Cliff Bridge — this striking coastal road bridge between Coalcliff and Scarborough is a highlight of the Grand Pacific Drive, curving out over the ocean.
- Belmore Basin — the heritage boat harbor near the CBD hosts fishing boats and private craft, offering a contrast to the heavy-industry port at Port Kembla.
- Lake Illawarra — accessible from several stations, the lake offers walking and cycling paths, birdwatching, and a quieter alternative to the surf beaches.
- Escarpment lookouts — vantage points along the escarpment deliver dramatic panoramas of the narrow coastal plain and Pacific Ocean.
- HARS Aircraft Museum — located at Albion Park south of the city, this aviation museum showcases historic aircraft and offers occasional tours.

Best Time to Visit
- Late November to late January — the optimal travel window brings warm, sunny beach weather with average temperatures around 21°C and manageable rainfall.
- September — spring brings the Dapto Street Fair and show, plus comfortable temperatures for walking and cycling before summer crowds arrive.
- Weekdays outside school holidays — beaches, cycle paths, and lookouts stay quiet on weekdays even in summer, while weekends and public holidays draw more visitors.
- Avoid Sunday afternoons on trains — services heading back to Sydney fill up significantly, making weekday returns a more comfortable option.

Planning Tips
- Use an Opal card or contactless payment — buses, trains, and shuttles are integrated into the Greater Sydney network; tap on and off for correct fares, including on free shuttle services.
- Rent a bike in Thirroul or the CBD — bike hire is available at both ends of the coastal cycle path, allowing one-way rides with a train return.
- Park free at beaches and on Sundays — foreshore parking is free, and multi-story CBD parking costs less than $2/hour with Sunday parking free citywide.
- Sit on the left upstairs heading from Sydney — for the best ocean and forest views on the train journey south.
- Watch drink safety on nights out — reports of drink-spiking exist; never leave drinks unattended and alert security if concerned.
