About this place
Welkom is the second-largest city in South Africa's Free State province and the heart of the Goldfields region. Founded in 1947 after gold was discovered on a farm of the same name — welkom means "welcome" in Afrikaans — the city grew rapidly around the mining of gold and uranium, becoming a major contributor to global gold sales. Its Sotho name, Matjhabeng ("where nations meet"), reflects the diverse workforce drawn from across southern Africa to the mines.
Beyond its mining heritage, Welkom is known for its distinctive urban design — a network of 33 large traffic circles replaces traffic lights in the Central Business District, creating a smooth flow that has attracted international study. Today the city balances its industrial roots with light manufacturing, agriculture, and a growing retail and services sector.
