About this place
Warsaw's Old and New Towns form the historic heart of Poland's capital, nestled in the central district of Śródmieście. Though compact compared to other European old towns, this area offers a charming, walkable journey through the city's founding layers. The New Town gets its name as the first settlement built beyond the original city walls, but its origins are not much newer than the Old Town itself.
Nearly destroyed during the Second World War, both districts were meticulously reconstructed in the immediate post-war years. Today, the facades feel authentically historic, but they represent a mid-20th-century recreation—a blend of building elements from different eras. Walking its streets, it is easy to forget that most structures date back only about 60 years rather than centuries.
