About this place
Vologda is a historic city in Northwestern Russia and a quiet stop on the Silver Ring of cultural centers. It lies about 470 km north of Moscow along the main rail route to Arkhangelsk and the Arctic. The city serves as a waypoint for domestic travelers heading to Veliky Ustyug during New Year and Orthodox Christmas holidays, yet it still sees few international visitors.
First mentioned in 1147, Vologda grew as a transit hub long before St. Petersburg was founded. For a brief period in the 1560s, Ivan the Terrible considered making it the capital of his domain. Today it offers an unhurried mix of northern character and regional history.
