About this place
Vladivostok is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway and Russia's largest port on the Pacific Ocean. With about 600,000 residents, it serves as the base for the Pacific Fleet and is the second-largest city in the Russian Far East. Surrounded by Amursky and Ussuriysky Gulfs and the Golden Horn Bay, the city climbs steep hills from the waterfront, mixing century-old architectural boulevards with Soviet-era blocks and modern high-rises.
Founded in 1860 as a naval outpost, Vladivostok was a closed military city for much of the Soviet period, only reopening to foreign visitors in 1992.
